Naples, Italy

So we made it into the port of Bari and managed to find our way to a train station. We attempted to ask those around what the best way to get to Naples was, but to our surprise people didn't really speak English like almost every single person we came into contact with in Greece did. Man, shouldn't other countries know they should have learned English for our personal benefit? Hmmm yep we are selfish haha. We whipped out our handy dandy page of maybe 10 Italian words and worked our magic using, Grazie (thank you), biglietta (ticket), and ciao (bye)....ya you can imagine how far that got us!! But we survived and made it to a bus to another train station to take us to tarento and on to Napoli. By the way, a bus full of people and 2 sweaty backpackers = no bueno and no fun!!!

The train ride totalled about 10 hours, and as hard as I tried I could not stay awake for the life of me on trains, but I couldn't, this jet lag thing is no joke I tells ya. Max stayed awake and watched the views because according to him he is a "machine" and needs no sleep....mmm hmmm we will see how long that lasts!!

me so sleepy :-(

We made it to Naples train station, and needed to navigate our way to our very first hostel experience, Hostel of the Sun. It said on the website it would only take about 15 minutes to walk there, so we started to head through the streets. Naples was busier and dirtier than Greece, and a bit scary. They had people lining the streets to sell us things, and there are no stop lights or signs. People literally walk out in the middle of traffic and cars stop. You hear screeching of tires and horns constantly. So this was a big adjustment for us, we had to just walk as close as possible behind others or run for our lives, or I guess the other option was get hit by a car. No worries, that did not happen. Oh and side note, everyone (guys and girls, old and young, large and small) wears skinny jeans.....why is that? If not that its white pants that you can see their underwear or the color purple....hmmm might need to look into a wardrobe change so that I can fit in!!!

Well our navigation techniques were not as good as we thought (or as good as Max thought), and we definitely got lost. After about an hour or walking, with our heavy packs might I remind you, we happened to stumble across a small sign on the side of a building in a tiny all, HOSTEL OF THE SUN, I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life. They buzzed us in and in we went. We proceeded into the smallest elevator, barely fit Max and I and our 2 packs.

Can touch each side of the elevator easily, ya that's small!!

But we made it up and were greeted by a very friendly young lady. She led us to the main office, which also had a little lounge with people watching TV as well as a little kitchen. She explained all details and showed us our room. Nothing exciting but the essentials, bed, chair, and a little TV with a DVD player. Oh and there was a bathroom but it was shared with the floor, reminded me of my freshman year of college.

Stairway up to our room

Our bare room!

We settled in and headed to our first restaurant in Italy, Solo Pizza. We had Prosciutto with mozzarella cheese, and then pizza with prosciutto and one with Italian sausage, and peppers, oh and coke (europe apparently doesn't have pepsi or DP, sad day). But they were right, Naples is definitely known for their pizza!!

We headed back to the hostel, popped in some good ol' Ocean's 13 and went to bed, big day tomorrow, off to Pompei!!
